Update: Our First Bargaining Meeting and Next Steps.

Dear Members,

We want to take a moment to check in with you regarding our ongoing bargaining efforts and the challenges that lie ahead. It is essential that we keep everyone informed and engaged during this pivotal time as we approach our next bargaining date in approximately six weeks.

Bargaining Progress and Challenges

The dynamics of our negotiations are intensifying, and we must recognize that the hurdles we face are significant, particularly as we have yet to address monetary issues. It is crucial that we present ourselves at the bargaining table in a manner that instills a sense of caution in the Employer; they must understand the consequences of upsetting us. Our commitment to transparency is vital, and sharing information openly with our membership will help maintain the pressure of open bargaining, reinforcing our collective strength

Upcoming Engagement Strategies

To foster community and solidarity among our members, we are considering organizing an outdoor drop-in BBQ or information session, possibly even another rally. With the arrival of nicer weather, this would be an excellent opportunity for members to come together, share their thoughts, and feel empowered in the bargaining process. Such events not only serve as a means of communication but also as a rallying point for our collective efforts.

Additionally, we aim to enhance our communication strategies by exploring the option of publishing both our proposals and the Employer's proposals on our website. This would create a centralized location for members to stay updated on the bargaining progress, fostering trust and engagement within our community.

Bargaining Session Update

This is an important update regarding our May 2nd bargaining session with Bayshore. During this session, we agreed on some general terms for the collective agreement, particularly concerning employer and union rights. While this may seem like a small victory, it is a positive development we can build upon. Bayshore has provided us with an updated employee list, and we are working diligently to enhance our contact lists to ensure everyone is kept informed. Please note that the OPSEU online sign-up system is currently down; if you need to sign up please leave us a message at the bottom of the website and someone will get back to assist you.

Challenges Ahead

It is critical to highlight that Bayshore operates under the misguided assumption that our new union status implies we should accept less than our true worth. Your bargaining team is resolute in its stance and will not tolerate this attitude. We may need to consider additional job actions to communicate our expectations and assert our rights as workers.

Moreover, Bayshore continues to deny us access to essential financial information regarding the profits generated from our labor. This lack of transparency poses a significant barrier to fair negotiations and undermines our ability to advocate effectively for our rights. We are currently engaging with government representatives to press for the disclosure of Bayshore's contract with the Ontario government. As taxpayers and employees, we have a right to this information, and we will assert that right.

Furthermore, Bayshore's failure to honor past agreements complicates our negotiations. Given these circumstances, it is time for us to stand firm and fight for what we truly deserve. We must unite and ensure that our collective voice is heard loud and clear in the upcoming sessions.

Would you be interested in a BBQ and/or information session to catch up on the Bargaining process?

  • Yes

  • No

Thank you for your continued support and engagement. Together, we will navigate these challenges and advocate for our rights!

In solidarity,

Your OPSEU/SEFPO Local 745 Executive Committee
